Changes in the Act on Residence of Foreigners from July 1, 2025!
- Last Updated: 01 July 2025
The National Council of the Slovak Republic has approved changes to the Act on Residence of Foreigners, which will come into effect on July 1, 2025.
Temporary residence for business
Submitting an application for temporary residence for the purpose of business at the Foreign Police department will no longer be possible from July 1, 2025. You can apply for temporary residence for the purpose of business only at the relevant Slovak diplomatic mission abroad based on quotas set by a government regulation for each calendar year and for each Slovak diplomatic mission (a total of 700 applications for the year 2025). A mandatory part of the application is a business plan (a template can be found on the website of the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic) and a document proving the feasibility and sustainability of the business activity. For temporary residence for the purpose of business, it is still necessary to prove financial coverage of your stay and financial coverage of your business activity; however, it is sufficient to submit only a bank account balance confirmation from two separate bank accounts. Temporary residence for the purpose of business will be granted for 3 years.
Changing the purpose of residence
You can apply for change of any purpose of temporary residence to business at the Foreign Police department only after 24 months from the granting of temporary residence.
Change from temporary residence for the purpose of study to another purpose is possible at the Foreign Police department only after successful completion of studies (passing the final exam) at a secondary school in Slovakia or after obtaining the first, second, or third degree of university education (regardless of whether you completed the university abroad or in Slovakia).
National visa validity
The validity period of the national visa required in connection with the submission of an application for residence in Slovakia is extended from 90 to 120 days.
Documents for residence application
You no longer need to submit one photo with the residence application and, in most cases, you also do not need to submit proof of financial coverage of the stay (except for applications for temporary residence for business, long-term residence, in case of a child born in the territory of the Slovak Republic or EU, and when applying for verification of an invitation - requiring a bank account balance confirmation).
Also, please note that from July 1, 2025, the amount of subsistence minimum changes from EUR 273.99 to EUR 284.13.
