Accommodation Options for Foreigners in Slovakia

The following forms of accommodation are available for a foreigner living in Slovakia: rented property, personally owned flat or house, facilities providing accommodation services, such as hotels, guesthouses and hostels. There are also reception camps and accommodation centres of the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic for asylum seekers, various integration facilities for asylum holders and children’s homes for unaccompanied minors.

Asylum seekers, foreigners who were granted asylum, have the possibility to apply for allocation of a social flat within the existing offer of these flats in some towns of the Slovak Republic. An asylum seeker upon his own decision, possibilities and abilities can solve his future by his own means.

Groups of migrants who can relatively easily find their own living are international students, interns or acquaintances of Slovak nationals.

The state does not provide assistance with finding accommodation to other groups of migrants – employed foreigners with permanent or temporary residence permit and persons with tolerated residence permit – while for some of them proving of arranged accommodation is already a condition for granting residence permit in the Slovak Republic.

There is no special housing allowance for foreigners in Slovakia. Housing allowance helps to cover housing-related costs to a person in material need and persons who are considered jointly with such person providing that legal conditions are met (if you are entitled to the benefit in material need, check the possibility of receiving housing allowance at the relevant Office of Labour).
