Employment of EU citizens

An EU citizen can be employed in the Slovak Republic without the need to obtain a work or other permit.

*EU citizen means a citizen of an EU Member State other than the Slovak Republic; a State that is a contracting party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA); and Switzerland

If an EU citizen registers his/her residence on the territory of the Slovak Republic on the basis of employment in Slovakia, he/she may attach to his/her application for registration of residence with the Aliens Police an employment contract, a promise from the employer or a confirmation of employment from the employer.

Information for employers of EU citizens:

If you employ an EU citizen, you are obliged to submit to the competent Labour, Social Affairs and Family Office an information card on the establishment of the employment relationship within 7 working days of the worker's commencement of employment.

If the employment of the EU citizen has been terminated, you as the employer are obliged to submit an information card on the termination of the employment relationship to the competent Labour, Social Affairs and Family Office within 7 working days of the termination of the employment.

The competent labour, social affairs and family office is the office in whose territorial district the EU citizen will be employed.

The information cards can be submitted by electronic service via the central portal of public administration slovensko.sk or in paper form, either by submitting a completed form at the registry office of the relevant labour office or by sending it by post.
