Permanent residence for an unlimited time period

The Police Authority may grant a permanent residence for an unlimited time period to a foreign national, who:

  • has held the permanent residence for five years at least for a period of 4 years;
  • is a child younger than 18 years of age of a foreigner with permanent residence for an unlimited time.

The application for a permanent residence for an unlimited time must be submitted in person, using an official form at the Foreign Police department in Slovakia

The applicant must present a valid passport and submit two photos as well as documents, not older than 90 days, proving:  

  • financial coverage
  • health insurance
  • clear criminal record, if the foreign national is a child over 14 and under 18 years of age of a foreign national who was granted a permanent residence permit for an unlimited time period;

If the applicant does not submit a valid passport, the Police Authority will not accept the application. The Police Authority may also request a document (not older than 90 days) confirming that the applicant has secured accommodation in Slovakia and an affidavit certifying that the purpose for granting the residence still exists. Application processing time is 90 days.

The application must be submitted on an official form issued by the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic.

Finances

The stay of the applicant must be financially covered in the amount of 12-times the minimum subsistence level (from July 2023 the sum of the minimum subsistence level is EUR 268.88). The financial coverage can be proved by submitting either a bank account balance confirmation held in the name of the foreign national in the Slovak republic or in their home country (translated to Slovak by a certified translator and duly verified) or a confirmation given by the employer about the applicant's monthly salary.

Accommodation

Document confirming the provision of accommodation can, for example, be an affidavit of real estate ownership (if the foreigner is the owner of the property) or a lease with the owner or user of the property and proof of eligibility to use the property in case of a lease agreement with the property user, or confirmation of the accommodation facility, a hotel or a boarding house, or an affidavit of a physical person or a legal entity of provision of accommodation to the foreign national on the territory of Slovakia and proof of eligibility to use the property in case of an affidavit of the property user.
