Types of health insurance

Health care, its range and quality, is to some extent conditioned by health insurance, therefore we it is necessary to look more closely at it here.

TYPES OF HEALTH INSURANCE

  • Compulsory health insurance: on this basis, a policyholder (insured person) is entitled to health care and services under the Health Insurance Act. Information about foreign nationals who are and who are not required to be insured in Slovakia, can be found here.
  • Individual (commercial) health insurance: on this basis, a policyholder is entitled to health care to the extent specified in the contract with the insurance company. Individual health insurance is provided under special legislation (The Civil Code). This may be the equivalent to compulsory insurance within the scope of primary health care (eg. for foreigners who are not entitled to participate in the public health insurance system), followed by supplemental insurance (for above-standard health care), or a combination of both.
