Permanent residence for an unlimited time period

The Police Authority may grant a permanent residence for an unlimited time period to a foreign national, who:

  • has held the permanent residence for five years at least for a period of 4 years;
  • is a child younger than 18 years of age of a foreigner with permanent residence for an unlimited time period.

In exceptional cases, permanent residence for an unlimited time period may be granted without meeting the legislative criteria, e.g. in case of a person with no citizenship.

A foreign national submits the application for permanent residence for an unlimited time period in person on an official form at the Police Authority in Slovakia. The application form is also available for download on the website of the Bureau of Border and Foreign Police. The Police Department shall decide  within 90 days from submitting the application.

Accompanying documents

With the application for permanent residence for an unlimited time period the foreigner will enclose the following documents, not older than 90 days, proving:

  • Financial coverage.
  • Health insurance.
  • Clear criminal record, if the foreign national is a child older than 14 and younger than 18 years of age of a foreign national holding a permanent residence for an unlimited time period.
  • Valid travel document and two identical photographs in passport format (3 x 3.5 cm). If the applicant does not submit a valid passport, the Police Authority will not accept the application

The Police Authority may also request a document (not older than 90 days) confirming that the applicant has secured  accommodation in Slovakia and an affidavit certifying the purpose of the granted residence still lasts.
