Supplementary Child Allowance

The supplementary child allowance is a type of state social benefit paid by the state to the entitled person for raising and nurturing the dependent child, in relation to which, the tax bonus cannot be claimed. Upon meeting certain conditions even a foreigner with permanent residence on the territory of the Slovak Republic is entitled to receive the allowance.

Conditions for receiving the allowance

The entitlement to receive the supplementary child allowance is reserved for a person, which is entitled to child allowance if at the same time the person:

  • is receiving a pension (old-age pension, early old-age pension, disability pension due to a reduction in the capacity to perform a gainful activity by more than 70%, a similar benefit in another member state) or care allowance
  • does not perform any gainful activity and the gainful activity is not performed by another natural person who can claim the tax bonus, and
  • was not granted a tax bonus on a dependent child, in relation to which the person is receiving the supplementary allowance.

The above conditions need to be jointly met by:

  • the parent of a child receiving the allowance and
  • the second parent of a child (or the spouse of a child’s parent, who is not a parent).

If the child is placed in the care of only one of the parents, the conditions of the second parent are not examined.

Amount of benefit

The amount of the supplementary child allowance is 30 EUR monthly and this amount is being adjusted each year on January 1st of the calendar year.

Application

The entitlement to allowance can be claimed at the Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family, department of State Social Benefits according to the entitled person’s place of permanent or temporary residence in Slovakia.
